Cancer Conferences/Tumor Boards

Cancer conferences/tumor boards are integral to improving the care of cancer patients. Tumor boards bring together key specialists and managing physicians involved in the care of cancer patients to:

  • Review the data
  • Determine accurate staging of the disease
  • Discuss clinical options including standards of care
  • Discuss sequencing of necessary procedures and treatments
  • Determine availability of clinical trials
  • Recommend plan of care

This process offers a broad bank of expertise to the patient care process, thus contributing to the patient management process and outcomes. Cancer conferences/tumor boards also provide an exceptional opportunity for educating physicians, physicians in training, nurses, pharmacists and other staff in current standards in cancer prevention and treatment, new technology in the pipeline, and available research trials available to community physicians and their patients.

McLaren Oakland Cancer Services currently offers monthly general cancer conferences on the second Monday of the month at 7:15AM. To be fully eligible for presentation to tumor board, the patient must have a pathologically confirmed malignancy and the managing physician is in process of determining appropriate treatment options for the initial or recurrent diagnosis. To schedule a case for prospective case presentation at tumor board, the managing physician should contact the Cancer Program Coordinator, Sharon Wilson at (248) 338-5748.
