Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) provides the patient with complete nutritional support. TPN infuses via a central venous catheter or port. Patients who are malnourished receive enough nutrients to maintain health. Vitamins, electrolytes, trace elements, and minerals are also provided to patients receiving TPN.
The following are samples of conditions that are covered with required documentation:
Pancreatitis
>> Elevated Amylase and/or Lipase
>> CAT scan showing pancreatitis
>> Pharmacological means failed
Malabsorption/Malnutrition
>> Albumin less than 3.4 G/DL (needs additional qualifier)
>> 72-hour fecal fat study (<50% absorption)
>> Surgical report showing resection
>> Documenting <5 ft small bowel (beyond ligament of Treitz)
Fistula
>> Fistula gram (positive)
>> CAT scan showing fistula (i.e., free fluid or air) bowel obstruction
>> X-ray or CAT scans
>> Documented lack of bowel movements
Hyperemesis in Pregnancy
>> Gestation
>> Steps taken to relieve hyperemesis
>> Frequent hospitalizations or ER visits
Delivery:
TPN is provided via pump through a central line or PICC line.
