The Expectant Parents Organization (EPO) is a nonprofit organization serving families in the mid-Michigan area. Our Mission is improve the health and well being of our community’s children by empowering parents with knowledge, skills, and resources needed for a safe and nurturing family environment.
EPO classes are taught by registered nurses and are held in several locations in the greater Lansing area. Working in cooperation with all area physicians, midwives, and hospitals, EPO serves over 1,600 expectant mothers, and their support persons each year. Approximately 35% of our clients have limited incomes and attend classes using our Financial Assistance Program.

A volunteer community Board of Directors governs the Expectant Parents Organization. Board members meet monthly on the first Monday of each month.

EPO FACULTY & STAFF
All instructors teaching prenatal classes for EPO are registered nurses, most of whom have a Bachelors Degree or higher level of education. Administrative and support staff for the Expectant Parents Organization includes an Executive Director, Education Coordinator, and Office Assistant.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
Four-Week Basic Prenatal Combo
This traditional prenatal and parenting series is recommended for first time parents. The Combo includes late pregnancy information, preparation for birth, labor & delivery, comfort measures and breathing & relaxation techniques, medications and anesthesia options, postpartum care, newborn care and feeding, and early parenting.
Three-Week Saturday Basic Prenatal Combo
The Prenatal Combo described above is also available in a three-week Saturday morning format.
One-Day Saturday Prenatal Seminar
A condensed version of the Prenatal Combo as listed above. This one-day seminar includes lunch.
Four-Week Natural Birth Series
A program for parents who plan to birth naturally. Through guided discussion of evidence based practice and current research, demonstration and practice of skills, and reflective activities to enhance mother, partner and baby relationship, mom and her support person will gain confidence in their ability to birth naturally. Using Lamaze’s Six Care Practices That Support Normal Birth, proven comfort techniques will be practiced in depth at each class.
Best Newborn Care Class Ever
Parents who complete this hands-on, three-week series will walk away feeling confident about how to care for their new baby. Topics covered include: infant CPR, infant massage, bathing, diapering, and general baby care, infant sleep safety, car seat safety, crying, keeping baby healthy, adjusting to your new baby, and feeding baby.
Labor & Delivery Refresher
This two-week series provides preparation for labor and birth. Topics include overview of labor and delivery, breathing and relaxation techniques, comfort measures, medications and anesthesia options.
Newborn Care And Feeding
This two-hour class will provide basic information about newborn care and feeding in the first weeks after delivery.
eClass Online Prenatal Program
An alternative for those parents who cannot attend conventional prenatal classes due to bedrest, scheduling conflicts or time constraints. The program is an interactive, web-based program that includes animated illustrations and videos.
Breastfeeding Class
This 2 ½ hour class gives you detailed preparation for breastfeeding. Topics include getting started right, avoiding problems, pumping and storage of breast milk and combining breastfeeding with an active life style.
Parents Expecting Multiples Class
Parents learn about topics of interest for those expecting multiple births. Topics include pregnancy during the last trimester, labor and delivery, and life at home with twins or triplets.
Teen Prenatal Series
Prenatal Series for teen mothers, ages 19 and under, and their support person. Topics include those listed above for the Prenatal Combo, as well as other topics and resources for teens.
Sibling Class
A class to help prepare children ages 3-8 years for the arrival of a new baby in the home. This class for the whole family includes a tour of Sparrow Mother Baby Center and special hands-on activities for children and parents.
Grandparents Class
Times have changed! This two-hour class gives grandparents the opportunity to update their skills and knowledge on preterm labor, childbirth, baby blues, breastfeeding, newborn care, and infant safety.
Private Classes
Private classes are two hours and may be held in the EPO office, at the client’s home or in the hospital. |
