Hydration therapy is needed when patients may be unable to secure or ingest adequate fluids to maintain hydration. Parenteral replacement of fluids and electrolytes restores fluid and electrolyte status.
Examples of diagnoses that may benefit from prolonged fluid and electrolyte infusion include:
>> Hyperemesis Gravidium
>> Gastrointestinal pathology
>> Cancer
>> Uncontrolled vomiting and/or diarrhea
Delivery:
Hydration therapy can be given via a PICC, central line or mediport.
