  
The first step in treating cancer effectively is to gain the best possible picture to determine the degree and exact location of the disease's progression. McLaren Cancer Institute is fortunate to have excellent imaging technology nearby, at the McLaren Imaging Center, on the campus of McLaren Flint.
McLaren Imaging Center
The McLaren Imaging Center is designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the ACR. The designation means that the breast imaging services at this center are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy.
In addition to digital mammography, The McLaren Imaging Center offers MRI, and CT imaging. The digital images pass through a sophisticated Computer-Aided Detection System (CAD) which detects minute irregularities in the body in addition to being carefully examined by fellowship-trained radiologists. All imaging completed for patients at the site can be easily accessible to their physicians through a special website portal where images and results are made available for authorized on-line viewing.
 PET/CT Imaging
McLaren Flint utilizes PET/CT imaging to aid in radiation treatment planning for many cancer cases. This mode of imaging provides physicians with more sensitivity, speed, resolution, and diagnostic confidence when treating patients. PET creates images of high metabolic activity in the body, rather than creating images of anatomy only. The PET scan detects changes in cellular function—such as how cells are utilizing nutrients such as sugar and oxygen. Since these functional changes take place before physical changes occur, PET can provide information that enables physicians to make an early diagnosis. CT scans allow doctors to see in a non-invasive way the internal structures within the human body. McLaren's mobile PET/CT unit provides superior image quality in both 2D and 3D modes. The unit is available to patients in Flint two days each week.
