Specialists recommend all women begin having annual mammograms at age 40. There is no stop date for this recommendation, which means that women should be having routine mammograms into their 80s and 90s, especially if they are otherwise healthy, and particularly if they have a family history of breast cancer or a prior personal history of breast cancer.
In addition, women who have a first degree relative (i.e., mother, sister, daughter) who have had breast cancer should begin having annual screening mammograms at age 40 OR at an age ten years younger than the age their first degree relative was diagnosed, whichever comes first. |
