The staff at McLaren Central Michigan’s Family Birthing Center has given various holiday gifts to December newborns for the past 10 years, but this year, new parents will head home for the holidays with a one-of-a-kind ornament.
The ornaments, created by the obstetrical nursing staff, are made by stamping each newborn’s footprint onto a clear, round, glass bulb, and raising the print using pink or blue embossing powder, depending on the gender of the infant.
Shirley Rowley, RN, has been working as a nurse at McLaren Central Michigan for nearly 30 years, and has spent 11 of those years as an obstetrical nurse in the Family Birthing Center.
“We’ve given booties and mittens to December infants in past years,” Rowley said. “This is our first year giving the ornaments, and our new parents just love them.”
