McLaren Bay Region is the only hospital in the Great Lakes Bay Region to offer the OrthoSensor(TM) Knee Balancer, which speeds up knee surgery recovery time so the patient has the best motion possible to do their exercises and get back to normal activities – and it increases the longevity of the new knee prosthesis.
More and more of us in the Great Lakes Bay Region are requiring total knee replacements. Minimally invasive surgical approaches have made knee surgery recovery times faster. Ortho surgery programs such as McLaren Bay Region’s “Joint Express” offer faster recovery times and less pain. However, according to Linda Szafranski, Director, Patient Care Services, “The number one reason for (post surgical) knees failing is loosening of the implants – and this can happen if the ligaments are not properly ‘balanced’ in order to support the (new) knee joint.”
The OrthoSensor Knee Balancer is embedded with sensors that wirelessly transmit key joint balance and load data to a graphic display on a computer that is in the OR suite. This enables the surgeon to immediately make adjustments to the soft tissues and optimize the knee implant’s placement. Surgical time is the same – and post-op recovery is quicker.
All of McLaren Bay Region’s orthopedic surgeons (see their names below) have adopted the OrthoSensor technology over the past several months, and the outcomes have been very encouraging.
The 405-bed hospital’s surgical staff and physicians have also earned top national honors from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for spinal surgery. This honor comes with the assurance of quality outcomes for our orthopedic patients who need these procedures. In addition, McLaren Bay’s orthopedic program has earned top rankings from CareChex,® placing the service in the top 10% in the state and nation, well as number one in the region for major joint procedures. These independent analyses of our orthopedic program provide a key data set for patients and referring physicians to decide where to send patients for orthopedic procedures.
“We’re very proud of our surgeons and support staff for these achievements,” said Szafranski.
