The fundraising efforts of the Auxiliary benefit McLaren Bay Region by providing monies which are used to purchase unbudgeted items needed by the hospital. These efforts also make our hospital better for the entire community along with providing you with some personal satisfaction.
Annual dues are $15. Board of Director Meetings are held the second Monday in the months of January, March, April, June, September, and November. In the months of February, May and October, general membership meetings are held which are luncheons. They are attended by the general membership and also other members of the community. No meetings are held in July and August.
The items outlined below will introduce you to the Auxiliary and the services it provides.
McLaren Bay Region is a subidiary of the McLaren Health Care. The subsidiary hospital also have active Auxiliaries.
Our Auxiliary is a part of the East Central District (ECD) of the Michigan Association of Healthcare Advocates (MAHA). The ECD has a meeting twice annually, usually spring and fall. MAHA has their annual meeting in June on Mackinac Island and their fall conference in October. These meetings usually consist of beneficial in-services and social dinners.
McLaren Bay Region Auxiliary has several fundraising efforts. Our biggest is the operation of the hospital gift shop. Etta Karr, a retired registered nurse, volunteers her time acting as manager. McLaren Bay Region is one of a handful of Auxiliaries that are fortunate to have a volunteer manager. Etta is assisted by a part-time paid assistant, a volunteer bookkeeper and two or three volunteer buyers.
The Auxiliary hosts a number of lobby sales each year. At those sales, vendors (some local) bring items into the lobby for sale. The vendors then donate a portion of their proceeds to the Auxiliary. Auxiliary volunteers sit in the lobby and help with the sales by helping the employees who wish to purchase by payroll deduction, complete the necessary forms. Examples of sales include uniforms, books, jewelry, and artwork.
Once a week Auxiliary volunteers sell popcorn in the lobby. We own a popcorn machine and are fortunate that the employees are always excited to purchase the popcorn. Proceeds from these sales total around $5,000 annually.
The most well known event the Auxiliary hosts is the Annual Charity Ball. This is held the first Saturday of December each year. A committee is formed each year with two volunteer chairpersons. This committee may also include community volunteers who are not members of the Auxiliary. The hospital president usually requests a particular item toward which the proceeds are raised. Proceeds usually range around $40,000.
The Auxiliary and the Bay Medical Foundation together hold an annual charity auction. The event is usually held the latter part of March. A committee is formed with two volunteer chairpersons. The committee, like the Charity Ball, may consist of community and volunteers in addition to Auxiliary and Foundation members. Proceeds from this average $50,000.
