Intensive Care

The Intensive Care Unit is an unfamiliar place for most of us, but this unit provides significant care to the people who need it most. The ICU is a specialized section of the hospital that provides care for people who are critically ill and need advanced medical treatment. Admission to the ICU may range from being in an extremely critical condition, in a coma, needing a ventilator to help with breathing, needing multiple medicines, and/or needing invasive lines and tubes.

Central Michigan residents can take comfort in knowing the staff at McLaren-Central Michigan is well-trained in specialized care for the critically ill. Intensivist Franco Parodi, MD has received specialized training in how the body works and reacts in critical health conditions. Studies have shown that care provided by an intensivist greatly improves the quality of care in the ICU. The Michigan Health and Safety Coalition found that fewer than 6,000 intensivists are in active practice in the United States, yet having an intensivist in the ICU has shown fewer deaths and complications, reduced lengths of hospital stays, and a better focus on patient safety.
